What is the Golden Mile & who can take part?
The Golden Mile is a health & fitness scheme designed by experts to get you fit & healthy in the safe grounds of your school by walking, jogging or running 50 miles in your school year.
There are 1,000’s of children just like you already taking part in the Golden Mile across the country!
So that means the Golden Mile is there for YOU! So enjoy it, have fun, but most importantly get yourself FIT & HEALTHY the Golden Mile way!
Can I walk all the time and still do 50 miles?
Of you course you can... Did you know that walking is one of the best exercises you can do to keep yourself healthy & in shape! It is also a good way to get your body ready for other activities such as jogging & running.
Walking also strengthens your leg & back muscles, improves the bones & strengthens the heart.
Do I have to stop at 50 miles or can I do more?
Here’s the good news... NO! You can do as many miles as you like. We do recommend you try & get to 50 Golden Miles during your school year. If you want to do more then that’s great news because it means you really are enjoying getting fit & healthy.
No matter how many miles you do, you will get a final certificate at the end of your school year congratulating you on your amazing achievement.
What do I get for taking part in the Golden Mile?
The first & the most important thing is you get yourself fit & healthy. You also get certificates of achievement throughout your 50 miles, such as a bronze certificate at 10 miles, a silver certificate at 25 miles & a gold certificate at 50 miles!
Not only that, you will get certificates for best achiever and most improved throughout the year. You will also get access to the fantastic Golden Mile website where you can take part in competitions & see how well your class & school are doing throughout the country.
It’s great to get fit by walking, jogging or running but you need to look at what you eat too... The Golden Mile will do that as well, you will receive fantastic recipe cards with famous sports stars & see what they eat to keep themselves fit & healthy.
Why do I have to do 50 miles in one year?
It is very important to stay fit & healthy throughout your whole life & not just your school life, so by doing 50 miles, (or even more is you can), you are well on the way to doing this
Even if you achieve 10 or 15 miles, its great that you are on your way to getting fit, but if you can do 50 you will notice how fit & healthy you have become!
What’s the difference between jogging & running?
There isn’t much difference, when you jog you go at a nice steady comfortable pace that suits you & your body. When you run you try to go a little quicker, meaning to try to “push” yourself a little harder.
But it’s ok to jog or run... once again the most important thing is you enjoy improving your fitness & trying to achieve those 50 Golden Miles whether you’re walking, jogging or running.
Should I walk or jog or run when we do the Golden Mile?
This is up to you... you can only do what your body tells you to do.
If you walk your 50 miles then fantastic, amazing well done for getting out there & doing it! If you want to jog or run then once again... wow, well done! But remember it’s not a problem if you jog or run & while you’re doing it you feel like you need to slow down & walk.
How many miles can I do each week?
This is up to you & your school. When you’re out on your Golden Mile course try to do as much as your body tells you... that’s very important, you must always listen to your body.
We recommend that you do about 2 miles a week, if you do, then it will take you 25 weeks to complete 50 miles, but when the weather is nice - you may feel like doing more!
Can my parents take part in the Golden Mile?
This once again is up to your school, some schools do a breakfast club where their parents come along to either help or take part. At one school a parent had never ran before they started doing the Golden Mile... 12 months later she took part in the London Marathon, and ran all the way round!
When I do the Golden Mile & start off by running I get out of breath & have to walk, is this ok?
This is fine because you are listening to your body!
A good idea may be to start by walking, then when you’re ready slowly jog for a bit, & when you feel ok try & step up your pace to a run... when you’re running & you’re getting tired, drop back down to a jog, if that's still too fast, then walk again. It’s just your body telling you to slow down that's all!
What shall I drink when I take part in the Golden Mile?
The best fluid you can drink is still water! Please avoid fizzy drinks, they are not good for you when you’re doing exercise! Water will replace the fluid the body loses when it does exercise.
I don’t do much sport in school but really like taking part in the Golden Mile, is there any where I can go to learn to run more or do more exercise?
Check out your Golden Mile website, there are loads of sports clubs in your area, and that will show where they are & where to go!
This is very important too... if you go to a club but you’re not sure you like it, then try another one... there are 100’s of different sports to take part in, so don’t be afraid to go & give them a try! If you’re not sure, then take a friend with you.
